Scarlet Royal (Scarlet Royal – “scarlet royal person”) is a seedless grape variety developed through American breeding. The variety was patented in 2006. It has a medium ripening period and medium-sized vines. According to the pedigree records, the parent forms include Blackrose, Calmeria, Cardinal, Crimson seedless, Italia, Muscat of Alexandria, White Oval Kishmish, and others. Both parent forms are seedless grape varieties. The cultivation of hybrid seedlings from two seedless grape parents became possible due to modern technologies that allow growing them in laboratories from embryos.
The bunches are medium in weight (around 800 g), conical, elongated, and range from medium-dense to dense. The berries are oval-shaped, dark red in color, with an average weight of 5.8 g and a pleasant, well-balanced flavor. The skin is thicker than average. Berries contain 3–4 small seed traces, which are not noticeable when eaten. The sugar content is 16.7%. Scarlet Royal bunches can hang on the vine for a long time, accumulating up to 22% or more sugar.
When gibberellins are applied during flowering at a concentration of 2.5 mg, and during berry growth at 20 ppm, the average berry weight increases to 8.3 g, with a diameter of 22 mm and a length of 33 mm. The average yield in California is 27 kg per vine, grown on a four-arm cordon and Y-shaped trellis system.
Scarlet Royal is not resistant to fungal diseases. The berries are firmly attached to the stem. The variety stores well in refrigeration. With its pleasant taste, large size, attractive color, and seedlessness, Scarlet Royal meets the expectations of modern consumers in developed countries.
